Summary

Nikon had a choice, they could compete with the big 2 Canon and Sony spec for spec and try to keep up with the Johnson's, or go the Fujifilm route and develop some character and soul and offer something a little different.  Nikon went the Fuji route with some vintage style cameras, a more filmic look, without class leading specs.  I think that move will pay off in the long run.
